Characterizations Bud
The main character of Bud, Not Buddy is, quite obviously, Bud. He is young boy at the age of ten, living in an orphanage located in Flint, Michigan. He keeps a suitcase filled with his personal treasures within his reach at all times. Those personal treasures are items he received from his mother, before her tragic death when he was merely six years old. Bud has dark skin, and is extremely skinny. (People throughout the book continuously make comments about his stringy muscles and flat stomache.) Although, Bud is surprisingly strong for his small size, both physically and mentally. He also has a very hopeful way of looking at the world, and believes there is a difference between being a coward, and being an idiot. Herman E. Calloway
Herman E. Calloway is the man Bud thought to be his father, from the clues his mother left him, but it turned out to be that Herman E. Calloway was in fact his Grandfather. Herman on the surface is just a pure grouch. A grumpy, angry old man. But the poor guy lost his young daughter- she ran away from home. Though Herman was a bit on the angry side even before that event, this occuring sent him over the edge. He loved his little girl, which was the reason he pushed her so hard... but eventually pushed her away. Herman E. Calloway is a very large, has gray hair and many wrinkles on his face, and withered and experienced hands.
